A saltier comment: What a privilege to complain about scraps and surplus! I have chased letters referenced in footnotes to dead ends, found lists of removed correspondence (with just enough detail to know it is important), and encountered lines like “family lore says she burned his personal diaries shortly after his death.” If Tom Wolfe made highlights in a TV Guide in 1987 I wouldn’t begrudge finding it in an archive.
